Spiritual Experiences
The entrance into the higher meditative life depends upon the grace of God.
The higher meditative life demands tremendous humility, serenity and courage.
In higher meditative life the senses and the mind are completely subdued.
There is no more use of the mind, emotions and imaginations.
In higher meditation the Yogi withdraws himself completely and enters into the state of consciousness above the mind and intellect.
He is conscious only of Pure Being.
In Samadhi or the superconscious state the Yogi abandons the sense of his own being and enters into the Being of God.
Spiritual experience will come to you when you are ready, but not before.
There is inner unfolding from level to level in your spiritual experience.
Wait patiently. Plod on in your Sadhana with purity and courage.
Like draws like on your spiritual journey.
You are never really left alone.
You will get help from Yogis and Saints internally, from different parts of the world.
Their spiritual vibrations will elevate and inspire you.
Meditate and enter into the realm of radiant light. There are no limitations; here there is no worry, there are no obstacles.

Cheer Up, O Friend! 1. Why do you weep, O Friend! You have no death. Why do you weep? You are bodiless and mindless. You are free from sorrow, pain, and delusion. You are Pure Consciousness, O friend!
2. There is neither old age nor death for you; Friend! why do you weep? Assert,  am the Wisdom, Immortal, the Homogeneous Essence, all-pervading like the Sky?
3. You are neither born nor dead. You are the pure attributeless Brahman. How can there be bondage and liberation for you, O Child!
4. O Friend! why do you weep? Drink the nectar of Immortality. Become the Self of the self.
5. Know the One Pure Consciousness which is without thought and mind. Know the One Consciousness which is without senses, Prana and intellect.
6. The Cause (Pure Consciousness) pervades the effect. The effect does not pervade the Cause. The effect is unreal. Therefore take hold of the Cause, the Real.
7. Commune with the indweller (God) through meditation and heartfelt prayer. Lay bare the troubles of your heart to Him. He will instil in you spiritual strength and Wisdom.
8. Meditation gives comfort, strength, peace, poise, success and develops your personality. Therefore meditate regularly.
9. By worrying all your energies are wasted. No useful purpose is served thereby. So give up all worries. Pray to God. All worries will end.
10. He who is desireless, self-controlled, passionless, tranquil and steady attains Self-realisation.
11.You are Pure and Bodiless. You have no mind. You are the Immortal, all-pervading Atman, the Supreme Truth. Assert This. Feel This. Realise this and be free, O Friend!

20 Important Spiritual Instructions
by Sri Swami Sivananda

These twenty instructions contain the very essence of all Yoga Sadhana. Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, and Raja Yoga will all come to one who follows them whole-heartedly. They are the unfailing keys to quick and effective development and culture of the physical, mental, moral and spiritual self of man.

1. BRAHMAMUHURTA
Get up at 4 a.m. daily. This is Brahmamuhurta which is extremely favourable for Sadhana. Do all your morning spiritual Sadhana during this period from 4 a.m. to 6:30 or 7 a.m. Such Sadhana gives quick and maximum progress.

2. ASANA
Sit on Padmasana (lotus pose), Siddhasana (adept's pose) or Sukhasana (any pose you like) for your Japa and meditation for half an hour, facing east or north. Increase the period gradually to three hours. Practice Sirshasana (headstand) and Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) for maintenance of health and Brahmacharya. Take light physical exercises as walking, etc., regularly. Do twenty rounds of easy, comfortable Pranayama (breathing exercises). Do not strain yourself while doing Pranayama.

3. JAPA
You can repeat any Mantra (sacred syllable), such as pure Om or Om Namo Narayanaya, Sri Ram, Sita Ram, Sri Ram Jaya Ram Jaya Jaya Ram, Om Namah Sivaya, Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, Om Saravanabhavaya Namah, Hari Om, or Gayatri (a sacred Vedic Mantra), according to your taste or inclination, from 108 times to 21,600 times daily. Devotees of Christ may repeat the name Jesus or Hail Mary, Mother of Jesus. Parsis, Sikhs and Muslims may select a name or Mantra from the Zend Avesta, Granth Sahib or Koran respectively.

4. DIETETIC DISCIPLINE
Take Sattvic food. Give up chillies, tamarind, garlic, onion, sour articles, oil, mustard, asafoetida. Observe moderation in diet (Mitahara). Do not overload the stomach. Give up those things which the mind likes best for a fortnight once or twice in a year. Eat simple food. Milk and fruits help concentration. Take food as medicine to keep the life going. Eating for enjoyment is a sin. Give up salt and sugar for a week or a fortnight. You must be able to live on rice, dhal and bread without any pickle. Do not ask for extra salt for dhal, and sugar for tea, coffee and milk. People taking a non-vegetaraian diet should try their best to gradually give up flesh-eating as completely as possible. They will be immensely benefited.

5. MEDITATION
Have a separate meditation room under lock and key. If this is not possible then a corner of the room should be set apart with a small cloth screen or curtain drawn across. Keep the room spotlessly clean.

6. SVADHYAYA
Study systematically the Gita, Ramayana, Bhagavatam, Vishnu-Sahasranama, Lalita-Sahasranama, Adityahridaya, Upanishads, Yoga Vasishta, Bible, Imitation of Christ, Zend Quran, the Tripitakas, the Granth Sahib and other religious books from half an hour to one hour daily, and have Suddha Vichara (pure thoughts).

7. ELEVATE THE MIND
Learn by heart some prayer – Slokas (prayer verses), Stotras (hymns) and repeat them as soon as you sit in the Asana before starting Japa or meditation. This will elevate the mind quickly.

8. BRAHMACHARYA
Preserve the vital force (Veerya (seminal energy)) very, very carefully. Veerya is God in motion or manifestation (Vibhuti). Veerya is all power. Veerya is all money. Veerya is the essence of life, thought and intelligence. This instruction is not for bachelors only. Householders also must follow it as far as possible. They must be extremely moderate in their marital connections with their spouse. This is very important.

9. CHARITY
Do charity regularly, every month, or even daily according to your means. Never fail in this item. If necessary forego some personal wants but keep up this charity regularly.

10. HAVE SATSANG
Give up bad company, smoking, meat and alcoholic liquors entirely. Have constant Satsang (association with holy people). Do not develop any evil habits. Deliberately exert to develop positive virtuous qualities.

11. FAST
Fast on Ekadasi (11th day of the Hindu lunar fortnight) or live on milk and fruits only. Christians must fast on alternate Sundays, Muslims on alternate Fridays, and Parsis on a suitable day every fortnight.

12. JAPA MALA
Have a Japa Mala (rosary) around your neck or in your pocket or underneath your pillow at night. This will remind you of God. Twirl the beads during your leisure. You should repeat the Name at all times, whatever task you may be engaged in.

13. OBSERVE MOUNA
Observe Mouna (vow of silence) for a couple of hours daily. Do not make gestures and inarticulate noises during the period of silence.

14. DISCIPLINE OF SPEECH
Speak the truth at all cost. Speak a little. Speak sweetly. Always utter encouraging words. Never condemn, criticize or discourage. Do not raise your voice and shout at little children or subordinates.

15. BE CONTENT
Reduce your wants. If you have four shirts, reduce the number to three or two. Lead a happy, contented life. Avoid unnecessary worry. Be mentally detached. Have plain living and high thinking. Think of those who do not possess even one-tenth of what you have. Share with others.

16. PRACTICE LOVE
Never hurt anybody. Ahimsa Paramo Dharmah (Non-injury is the highest virtue). Control anger by love, Kshama (forgiveness) and Daya (compassion). Serve the sick and the poor with love and affection. This is service of God.

17. BE SELF RELIANT
Do not depend upon servants. Self-reliance is the highest of all virtues.

18. HAVE SELF-ANALYSIS
Think of the mistakes you have committed during the course of the day, just before retiring to bed (self-analysis). Keep a daily spiritual diary and self-correction register as Benjamin Franklin did. Maintain a daily routine and resolve-form. Do not brood over past mistakes.

19. DO YOUR DUTY
Remember that death is awaiting you at every moment. Never fail to fulfil your duties. Have pure conduct (Sadachara).

20. REMEMBER GOD
Think of God as soon as you wake up and just before you go to sleep, and at all other times whether engaged in any work or not. Repeat His Name always. Surrender yourself completely to God (Saranagati).

This is the essence of all spiritual Sadhana. It will lead you to liberation. All these spiritual canons must be rigidly observed. You must not give any leniency to the mind. c MMVII    Privacy Policy

Sivananda Yoga

Meditate,Realize)。

The Eight Limbs of Raja Yoga

Compiled by the Sage Patanjali Maharishi in the Yoga Sutras, the Eight Limbs are a progressive series of steps or disciplines which purify the body and mind, ultimately leading the yogi to enlightenment. These 8 limbs are:

1 Yamas – The Yamas or restraints (Don'ts) are divided into five moral injuctions, aimed at destroying the lower nature. They should all be practiced and developped by the letter but also more importantly in the spirit. They should all be practiced in word, thought and deed.
 1.1Ahimsa or non-violence
 1.2Satyam or truthfulness
1.3Brahmacharya or moderation in all things (control of all senses). Also refers to celibacy
 1.4Asteya or non-stealing
 1.5Aparigraha or non-covetousness
2Niyamas – The Niyamas or observances (Do's) are also divided into five and complete the ethical precepts started with the Yama.. These qualities are:
2.1Saucha or purity – this internal and external cleanliness.
 2.2Santosha or contentment
 2.3Tapas or austerity
2.4Swadhyaya or study of the sacred texts
2.5Ishwara Pranidhana which is constantly living with an awareness of the divine Presence (surrender to God's Will)
3 Asanas – Postures
4 Pranayama – regulation or control of the breath. Asanas and Pranayama form the sub-division of Raja Yoga known as Hatha-Yoga
5 Pratyahara – withdrawal of the senses in order to still the mind.
6 Dharana – concentration. The last 3 steps constitute the internal practice of Raja Yoga. When Dharana is achieved, it leads to the next step:
7 Dhyana – meditation is that state of pure thought and absorption in the object of meditation. There is still duality in Dhyana. When mastered Dhyana leads to the last step:
8 Samadhi – the superconscious state. In Samadhi non-duality or oneness is experienced. This is the deepest and highest state of consciousness where body and mind have been transcended and the Yogi is one with the Self or God.
From:http://www.sivananda.org/teachings/philosophy/eightlimbs.html

more information….www.sivanada.org

Swami Sivananda, one of the greatest Yoga masters of the 20th century, is the inspiration behind the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers.

His Early Life
Born in 1887 in Pattamadai, Tamil Nadu, South India, Swami Sivananda whose name was then Kuppuswami, was a brilliant boy at studying as well as gymnastics and naturally inclined toward spiritual and religious practices.
His parents were very devoted to Lord Siva and Kuppuswami was eager to join them twice daily for worship (Puja) and Kirtan (Mantra chanting).
His natural selfless spirit lead him to a career in the medical field. His amazing eagerness and ability to learn and assimilate his studies earned him the respect of his professors who invited him to attend surgeries while still in his first year of medical school.

Dr. Kuppuswami
The young Dr. Kuppuswami felt a strong urge to go to Malaysia where he felt there was great need. In a short time he was given the responsibility of running a hospital. During these years Dr. Kuppuswami was renowned as being both an excellent doctor and a true humanitarian. Very often he waived consultation fees for patients too poor to afford his services and on many occasions provided medicine for free to his neediest patients.

One day Dr. Kuppuswami had the opportunity to cure a wandering Sannyasin (renunciate or Monk) who then gave the doctor instruction on Yoga and Vedanta. From that day on his life changed, and gradually Dr. Kuppuswami became more introspective and could not stop pondering the great questions of life. Now he felt the need to help people on a more profound level, not just healing their physical body, but helping them to find a cure for all suffering.

The Great Sannyasin Swami Sivananda
Filled with a tremendous desire for spiritual growth and enlightenment Kuppuswami went to North India in search of his Guru. After spending time in Varanasi (Banaras) he travelled north to the Himalayas. There in the holy town of Rishikesh (which means "the abode of the sages") Kuppuswami discovered his Guru who gave him Sannyas (a monk's vows of renunciation). After taking these vows, Swami Sivananda Saraswati, as he would be known henceforth, started an extremely intense daily Sadhana (spiritual practices) and Tapas (austerities) for the next 10 years or so. By the end of that period many co-Sadhus felt drawn to Swami Sivananda for his instruction and his spiritual inspiration.

Swami Sivananda, The World Teacher
From that time Swami Sivananda became one of the most prolific Yoga teachers who has ever existed. Although he rarely left the little town of Rishikesh (with only 2 India tours and no visits abroad) Swami Sivananda's teachings spread quickly throughout our entire planet. He personally wrote – by hand, no computers at the time 🙂 – more than 200 books on topics connected to Yoga and Philosophy. He wrote in a style that is very direct and bursting with dynamic, spiritual energy. As a result many who read his books felt their lives deeply touched and transformed and so came from all of India, all of the world, to learn from him directly, and to bask in his holy presence. The teachings of Master Sivananda are summarized in these 6 words:

"Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realize".
In 1957, Swami sivananda sent his devoted and industrious disciple, Swami Vishnu-devananda to the West where he then established the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers.

 The 5 Points of Yoga
In an effort to simplify and clarify the complex philosophies and teachings of Yoga, Swami Vishnu-devananda summarized the wisdom of Yoga in five principles. These 5 points show the way to developing physical and mental health as well as spiritual growth:
Proper Exercise (Asanas)
Proper Breathing (Pranayama)
Proper Relaxation (Savasana)
Proper Diet (vegetarian)
Positive Thinking (Vedanta)
and Meditation (Dhyana)

Swami Sivananda's contribution to the world is to have revived the tradition of the yoga of synthesis, integrating the four main paths of Yoga into a well-balanced Sadhana (spiritual discipline). The essence of his teachings can be summarized in the aphorism "Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realize," seen in our banner image on each page of this site.Other topics covered in this site include: Karma & Reincarnation; the 8 limbs of Yoga; the 3 Gunas; a humor page; Spiritual links; excerpts from the best-seller "101 tips on Hatha Yoga", a collection of vegetarian yogic recipes, 20 spiritual instructions, Sadhana Tattwa (the science of seven cultures), and a page on our Prison Project. © MMVII    Privacy Policy

Vedanta and Jnana Yoga
The beauty of Vedanta is that it transcends dry philosophy and mere intellectual concept. Vedanta is an actual life experience, a philosophy in practice. This practice includes the many techniques of Jnana Yoga (The Yoga of will and intellect).

Sri Swami Adhyatmanandaji Maharaj of the Sivananda Ashram, Ahmedabad, is a beloved disciple of H.H Sri Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj. Writing an introduction about Swamiji is extremely difficult because words will always fall short of describing him. How can you capture an infinite personality with finite words? He is a dynamic yogi having a multifaceted, magnetic and versatile personality. He is a spiritual giant who touches the heart of everyone who comes in contact with him. Swamiji naturally radiates peace, love and divinity. People from all walks of life find solace in his holy presence. He is approachable to one and all, whether he is a chief minister or a celebrity tennis player or a common person. His unparalleled devotion, loyalty and obedience to the master in all circumstances is noteworthy.
He is one of the most sought after speakers in India and abroad. His lectures are a spontaneous outpouring of divine wisdom. His ability to make the esoteric subject of spirituality simple through a perfect blend of humor, melodious singing and down to earth practical approach put him in the class all by himself. Swamiji is well known for his ability to lead kirtans to the highest ecstasy through his melodious voice and supreme devotion. He is embodiment of love purity, and truth.
He is a yogacharya, having conducted more than 560 yoga shibirs in India and abroad for armies, universities and private sector companies. He is a master organizer, able to work for several days without sleeping. Swamji can attend to several tasks at one time unlike other worldly people and was described as being astavadhani. He is a strict disciplinarian, prompt, precise and punctual.
For more than a quarter of a century, he has been incessantly spreading message of Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj all over the world. “Bear insult and bear injury that is the greatest Sadhana,” so says Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj. And that our beloved Swamiji Maharaj has made the guiding principle for himself.

dear all:

judy
-------------------------------------------------------

 Namaste

Score one point if you can bend and place you hands flat on the floor without bending you knees.

Score one point for each elbow that will bend backwards.

Score one point for each knee that will bend backwards.

Score one point for each thumb that will bend backwards to touch the forearm.

Score one point for each hand when you can bend the little finger back beyond 90°.

Ligament laxity

Osteoarthriticjoint degeneration

Poor muscle support or control

A combination of these factors

Diagnosis of Hypermobility Syndrome or HMS should be made using the Brighton Criteria.

LOTS OF INFORMATION ABOUT HYPERMOBILITY SYNDROME (HMS)

http://www.myfibrosite.com/users/dayna/hypermobilitysyndrome.html

WHAT IS HMS?

When the Hypermobility Syndrome was first put on the medical map in 1967, it was defined as the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms (predominantly pain) occurring in otherwise healthy individuals. Thirty years down the line we now think that there are probably two types of hypermobility. The first is a milder type occurring in people whose joints are just like everyone else’s but which have the capacity to move more than most people’s joints. The other, a more marked form, has features that suggest that it may be part of an inherited connective tissue disorder similar to the hypermobile form of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, formerly called EDS III. It probably is EDS. At the present time we simply do not know for certain. So it is called Hypermobility Syndrome.

There are many people with joint hypermobility in the community who experience no (or very little) pain. Most of them probably do not even know that they are hypermobile at all. Then something happens, and they start getting pains for the first time in their lives. Usually unexpected exercise or a change of job or lifestyle provokes the onset of pain. When ever symptoms commence, and irrespective of the cause of the hypermobility, the term ‘Hypermobility Syndrome’ is used to describe the condition. Hypermobile people without pain are just called hypermobile people. The hypermobility syndrome is a fairly frequent finding in the young, especially female patient. Connective tissue proteins such as collagen give the body its intrinsic toughness. When they are differently formed, the results are mainly felt in the “moving parts” – the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments – which are laxer and more fragile that is the case for most people. The result is joint laxity with hypermobility and with it comes vulnerability to the effects of injury.

HOW IS HYPERMOBILITY MEASURED?

Variations between one person and another make it difficult to measure hypermobility. The most popular system is the ‘Carter and Wilkinson’ score, (see figure below and the scoring chart). Give yourself one point for each of the five simple tests you can do. Do the tests on the arm and leg on both sides of your body, so the maximum score is nine. An average person might score 1 or even 2 of these. But only about 1 or 2 in a hundred healthy people score 5/9 or more. If you scored 5/9 or more, you have ‘joint hypermobility’ But still not neccessarily the syndrome. Scores:

1. Can you put your hands flat on the floor with your knees straight? (1 point)

2. Can you bend your elbow backwards? ( 1 point for each elbow = 2 points total)

3. Can you bend your knee backwards? (1 point for each knee = 2 points total)

4. Can you bend your thumb back on to the front of your forearm? (1 point for each thumb = 2 points total)

5. Can you bend your little finger up at 90° (right angles) to the back of your hand?

(1 point for each finger = 2 points in total)

MAXIMUM SCORE IS OUT OF 9.

WHAT IS THE DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR HYPERMOBILITY SYNDROME?

Major Diagnostic Criteria Includes:-

* Generalised joint hypermobility (floppy/double joints) The beighton scale is a test to be done to diagnose hypermobile joints. (please see above) You have to score 5/9 to have hypermobile joints. An average person might score 1 or even 2 of these

*(Pain) Arthralgia for longer than 3 months in 4 or more joints

Minor Diagnostic Criteria Includes:-

*Dislocation/subluxation in more than one joint, or in one joint on more than one occasion.

*Arthralgia (> 3 months) in one to three joints or back pain (> 3 months), spondylosis, spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis.

*Soft tissue rheumatism. > 3 lesions (e.g. epicondylitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis).

*Marfanoid habitus (tall, slim, span/height ratio >1.03, upper: lower segment ratio less than 0.89, arachnodactily [positive Steinberg/wrist signs].

*Abnormal skin: striae, hyperextensibility, thin skin, papyraceous scarring.

*Eye signs: drooping eyelids or myopia or antimongoloid slant.

*Varicose veins or hernia or uterine/rectal prolapse.

The BJHS is diagnosed in the presence two major criteria, or one major and two minor criteria, or four minor criteria. Two minor criteria will suffice where there is an unequivocally affected first-degree relative.

BJHS is excluded by presence of Marfan or Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (other than the EDS Hypermobility type (formerly EDS III) as defined by the Ghent 1996 (8) and the Villefranche 1998 (9) criteria respectively). Criteria Major 1 and Minor 1 are mutually exclusive as are Major 2 and Minor 2.

WHAT CAUSES HMS?

People are born hypermobile It is in their genes. It is the way they are made, but that doesn`t mean that they will develope the syndrome (the pain). In fact only a minor percentage of people develope the syndrome. So how is it that people with hypermobility can be literally fine for decades, only to be laid low from widespread pain, often out of the blue, which may make its unwelcome appearance during childhood, adolescence, or adult life? To explain these curious and seemingly inexplicable happenings, we postulate that the affected person, in this case the hypermobile person, had an inbuilt weakness of her (it is usually a ‘her’ but not always) strength-providing collagen or similar protein. This weakness renders body tissues less robust and hence less able to stand up to the physical strains of everyday life.

Current thinking suggests that there are four factors, which affect different people in different proportions. They are:

1. The shape of the ends of the bones (where they move at the joints)

2. Weak or stretched ligaments caused by problems with collagen and other proteins (the ligaments are bands which hold your joints in place)

3. The tone of your muscles (this affects whether joints are held loosely or more rigidly)

4. Your sense of joint movement (this is the sense that tells you exactly where your joint is positioned and whether it is over-stretched).

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HMS?

If you have hypermobility syndrome you may have the following symptoms.

The most frequent symptom is pain. This usually happens after hard physical work or exercise, where your muscles have to work much harder if the joints are supple than if they are stiff. As a result, what doctors call an ‘over-use’ develops in the muscles around the joint (though it may appear to come from the joint). Sometimes fluid collects inside the hypermobile joint, making it feel tense and stiff. This is probably because your body is trying to repair the small amounts of damage that are caused if the joint is over-stretched. Your pain will often get worse as the day goes on and improve at night with rest. Sometimes, however, pain also occurs at night. If your hypermobile joints are caused by altered collagen protein, then collagen may be weakened in other parts of your body. This can lead to hernias or varicose veins. You may also have a flat arch to your foot and this leads to foot ache, particularly after standing for a long period. Backache may affect you if the base of your spine is particularly supple, sometimes as a result of one vertebra slipping on another. This is called a spondylolisthesis. There is a whole host of painful injuries that can result, ranging from dislocations to fractures, disc prolapse, ligament sprains, muscle strains, pulled tendons (like tennis elbow or plantar fasciitis), etc.-conditions that can happen to anyone, but which occur more easily in those with the HMS/EDS.

You may experience acute pain, joint effusions, recurrent subluxations or dislocations, idiopathic scoliosis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other neuropathies, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, prolapse of the mitral valve, foot abnormalities and osteoarthritis. Patients with the HMS/EDS for some reason do not appear to experience the full anaesthetic affect of lignocaine injections when these are given for dental purposes, minor surgery or for epidural anaesthesia.

HOW IS HMS TREATED?

Hypermobility Syndorme is not well known enough, not even some doctors know what it is, therefore leaving treatments still to be investigated further. Sufferers will know that many conventional methods of treatment, of the kind offered for rheumatic complaints in general, are not particularly helpful in the HMS/EDS. Physiotherapy still carries the best prospect for pain relief, and it is encouraging that more physiotherapists are training in methods that are helpful in this condition. Although there are alot of physiotherapists that I’ve met that I`ve had to explain what hypermobility syndrome is never mind the treatment for it. Opinions do vary but some say gentle exercises to strengthen and condition the muscles around the joints that are particularly supple should be done. These exercises may be against weights or may just be the sort that anybody can do themselves at home, ask a physio or doctor who knows about hypermobility syndrome to advise you on what kinds of excersizes. The important thing is to do these strengthening exercises frequently and regularly and do not over-do them. Some people with joint hypermobility find it helpful to keep moving – you can wear a splint or a firm elasticated bandage over the supple joint to protect against dislocation. Occupational therapists can advise on these. Your doctor may prescribe painkillers (analgesics, but if the joint often swells up, an anti-inflammatory drug may be better. You can also apply either painkillers or anti-inflammatories onto the troublesome joint as a spray or cream. Another noteworthy development is the network of units throughout the country that are offering pain management programmes, an approach which has been shown to be beneficial in the HMS/EDS where intractable pain is present. Again the treatments are are all trial and error and self help trying to relieve a little and to cope.

WILL SURGERY HELP MY HYPERMOBILE JOINTS?

In general, you should avoid surgery if possible, not least because supple tissue does not always heal well and quickly. Also, some hypermobile people are prone to bruising easily and may require more blood transfusions if major surgery is carried out.

However, if you have the bad luck to rupture a tendon, which is more common if you have supple collagen, this should usually be repaired surgically. Otherwise, in general, you should avoid operations if you can. Operations may be suggested to you, such as removing a kneecap that dislocates frequently, or stabilising a very supple joint with a pin to fuse it. Avoid these if you can as they may eventually cause osteoarthritis. (Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis which affects the cartilage within the joint.) Although surgery can bring on osteoarthritis, there is a link if your hypermobility is due to abnormal shape of the bone surfaces or to abnormal joint position sense, to developing osteoarthritis.

WHAT IS THE PROGNOSIS OF HMS & WILL THIS BE PASSED ON TO MY CHILDREN?

A sense called proprioception, which means knowing where parts of one’s body are in space. If you close your eyes and somebody bends your finger for you or picks your arm up, you know immediately how far your finger is bent or where your arm now is. That is because you have good proprioception. Scientists have shown that people with the HMS/EDS are not quite as good as other people in knowing exactly where their fingers or arms etc are in space. This could lead to a further increase in the risk of injury. As decribed above people with hypermobility syndrome can develope flat-footedness, club-footedness, knock knees, swan neck along with other out of line joints. Hypermobile people seem to be prone to Osteoarthritis with an increased risk if developing hypermobility syndrome at a younger age. It doesn`t mean to say that everyone will develop this but it is a possibility.

Life expectancy is not proven to be reduced.

EDS is hereditary (that is, that the condition is passed on from one generation to the next) and as the kids inherit the gene from you or your partner and it is a dominant gene then the chances are 50percent for each of your children with having it. Unless it was a spontaneous mutation in your daughter/son making them the first in the family to show signs of it.

It is a 50 50 chance for each and every one of your children.

If your hypermobility comes from abnormal collagen proteins, there is often strong evidence of heredity. This means that, at worst, half of all children of a person with this type of hypermobility will be affected. though, for reasons we do not understand, the degree to which the child is affected is very variable. If your child does develop hypermobile joints it does not mean that they will automatically get the pain (syndrome/hms/eds) type just because you have it. There is no evidence to confirm or deny this. There is a combination of cases and about a quarter of all examples of hypermobility affect people who have no previous family history of it.

There is thought to be connections between FMS & HMS but they are still researching these at present. Although there is still much to learn, the understanding of HMS is advancing and the knowledge gained can help people deal with the various aspects.

「Light on Yoga」

Iyengar。

Virabhadrasana I

CURVE of T-SPINE TO RIGHT ABOUT 49 DEGREE,胸椎側彎49度,由她現身說法,再搭配上艾因嘉的親自指導的經驗,她所傳達的教學指令十分細微,令同是側彎的佳鈴能感同身受.

"Yoga For Scoliosis" Video For A Home Practice
Thirty years after yoga relieving her own scoliosis, Senior Certified Iyengar yoga teacher and back care expert, Elise Browning Miller, has just launched a new video and DVD on yoga for scoliosis.

“Yoga for Scoliosis with Elise Browning Miller” is a 50-minute home yoga practice with three sections, approx. 17 minutes each, that can be practiced individually or in their entirety. This program provides a beginning practice for most people with scoliosis based upon a proven method that focuses on lengthening the spine, stretching muscles that have become tight and strengthening those that have become weak. Focused attention is placed on de-rotating the spine and ribs, while overall creating more balance and harmony in the body.

Through this practice, people with scoliosis can take charge of their own back to achieve better posture while decreasing back pain and discomfort.

This video is not intended as a substitute for medical care and should not be considered as offering medical advice or as a substitution or recommendation of medical treatment. You are encouraged to consult with your physician before practicing any pose in this video.

What is Scoliosis
The word scoliosis is derived from the Greek word “skol” which means twists and turns, and is defined as a lateral curve of the spine with a rotational component. As shown in Figure 1, the ribs are connected to the spine and move with the spine. With scoliosis, the spine moves laterally, forming an “S” (or “C”) curve and rotates at the same time. The ribs follow both this lateral and rotational movement of the spine. On this lateral curve side, the ribs and intercostal muscles between the ribs move sideways, spread apart and rotate backwards with the spine [this is called the convex side of the back]. On the opposite side of the lateral curve, the intercostal muscles are underdeveloped and the ribs are compressed. Because of the rotation of the spine, the ribs are pushed forward forming a flat back. [this is called the concave side of the back].

As a result of these lateral and rotational movements, there is postural misalignment: the ribs are rotated, the shoulders can be at different heights with one shoulder blade more prominent than the other, and one hip may be higher than the other, resulting in an uneven waist. The head is sometimes not centered directly above the pelvis and the entire body can be leaning to one side. The most obvious symptoms of scoliosis are cosmetic, yet pain and discomfort are also common. In extreme cases, there can be cardiopulmonary complications. This booklet, as well as the video "Yoga for Scoliosis with Elise Browning Miller", discusses the role that yoga poses can play in addressing these conditions.

Structural and Functional Scoliosis
Scoliosis can be either structural or functional (non-structural).

a. Structural scoliosis is much more serious and develops as a result of unequal growth of the two sides of the vertebral bodies. Usually appearing during adolescence, its causes are not well understood by medical science.

b. Functional (Non-structural) scoliosis only affects the muscular back and does not alter the body structurally. It can result from such things as poor posture or repeated unbalanced activity such as carrying heavy books or any heavy object always on one side. It is much more common than structural scoliosis, and usually much less noticeable, since the degree of curvature is less and almost always reversible.

A simple way to determine whether someone has a structural or functional scoliosis is to have them bend forward into a forward bend. This is a standard screening test given in junior high to determine if students have adolescent structural scoliosis. If a lateral curve is visible in a standing position yet disappears in a forward bend, the scoliosis is functional. If it remains and the rotational component becomes more obvious, it is within the structure of the ribs and spine and is a structural scoliosis.

Approximately 80% of all structural scoliosis are idiopathic, meaning doctors do not know why or from where it comes. Idiopathic scoliosis first develops in girls between the ages of 10 and 14; and in boys between the ages of 12 and 15. Other causes of structural scoliosis are: congenital where the vertebrae fail to separate, or neuromuscular, such as polio or cerebral palsy and also from accidents that involve the spine and/or ribs. In some cases, leg differentiation can cause scoliosis in the lumbar ( lower back) region. This results in uneven hips.

The Major Scoliosis Curve Patterns
Curvature can take place anywhere along the length of the spinal column, however there are four most common patterns of curvature. To be able to use yoga effectively for your scoliosis, find out what pattern you have from an orthopedic surgeon or knowledgeable professional in this field.

a. Right thoracic Scoliosis indicates that the major scoliosis is concentrated in the thoracic (mid-back) region and curves to the right. In the right thoracic scoliosis there may also be a counter curve to the left in the lumbar (lower back) region, but this is a less severe curve.

b. Left lumbar Scoliosis indicates that the major curve is to the left and is concentrated in the lumbar region. There may be an opposite curve less extreme to the right in the thoracic region.

c. Right thoraco-lumbar Scoliosis indicates that the major curve is to the right in the thoracic and lumbar region. This is commonly known as a “C” curve.

d. Right thoracic-left lumbar Scoliosis. The last type of curvature is the combined curve where the major curve is in the thoracic region with an equal counter curve to the left in the lumbar region. This is commonly known as an “S” curve.

For unknown reasons, 90 percent of thoracic and double curves are right convexity (curve to the right); 80 percent of the thoraco-lumbar curves also are right convexity; and 70 percent of the lumbar curves are left convexity. There can also be triple curves with an additional lateral curve in the cervical or neck region. Also two or more lateral curves can be in the thoracic region of the back with a major lumbar curve. With a more severe scoliosis, seven times as many women as men have scoliosis.
